Hi,
My recommendations for a new PC are first to wait for Ivy Bridge and get ~ 16GB or 24GB RAM. The reason for all this RAM is the IQ Data File Analyser is now a standalone file and it will make use of the RAM when analysing a recording. Also the Analyser is now a standalone program and can play back a recording as well, you can just click on a signal of interesting in the Analyser display and hear it. There are also some very features I may add later which can make use of lots of RAM. They day will soon come when we can display all 30MHz of the shortwaves with 1Hz resolution, this opens up amazing possibilities.
As for graphics – at the moment I’m not using the big-boy graphics such as Direct-X or OpenGL but I may well start displaying 3D waterfalls soon. So at the very least make sure you have enough PSU to drive a decent graphics card. I’m using a NVidia GTX 460 and it’s not really having to work at all.
FWIW Console v2 (a complete rewrite) is using 2% to 4% on my 2.8GHz i7 while running 3 VFOs. At the moment I’m listening to 6095kHz KBC radio and it’s using just 1% CPU with a zr30W display (2560 x 1600). I reserve the right to eat your CPU cycles later…
